Interview Advice

"After completing my MCC course I decided to work with BLISS Training to help me prepare for the pilot interview process. The session was really helpful and gave me an insight into what airlines are looking for in the interview. I received the feedback I need to really polish my interview skills." Richard, Commercial Pilot

Pilot Interview Tips and Advice

Getting Prepared

Be Clear On The Route Ahead

  • Know who is interviewing you and their position. It is not always the Chief Pilot and often includes HR.

  • Research the Airline, background and consider commercial aspects such as on time performance. Look at the "Latest News" on their website, in the press and on the internet.

  • Understand the culture of the airline - again their website will give you some indication, you could even contact other pilots who work there.

  • Make sure you know the content of your Pilot CV.

  • Take a copy of your Pilot CV, application form, log books and licences.

  • Be prepared to answer typical pilot interview questions on:
  1. The technical aspects of the role (this could be on a specific aircraft type or ATPL questions or both).
  2. Your background and work history.
  • Have answers prepared for the pilot interview questions which are behavioural or competency based. (Real examples).

  • Prepare a set of questions for the interviewers that demonstrate a commitment to the Airline.

Presenting Yourself

You Have Control - Stay Focused

  • A smart suit will always give the impression that you are serious about the Airline and the position. Don't dress to match the office dress code if it is casual, demonstrate you are serious about the interview.

  • Remember that you are being observed from the moment you step onto the premises, so build rapport and create a good impression.

  • Remain focused before the interview starts. Remind yourself you are right for the position, which the airline identified on your pilot CV.

  • When answering pilot interview questions and competency questions speak clearly and concisely. Be mindful of how fast you are talking. Give them time to take good notes.

  • Smile and make eye contact with your interviewer(s) throughout the interview.

  • Remain positive throughout your interview. Even if you had a difficult journey, don't mention it, just stick to positive conversation.
